※ Clip College Hour Report Draft
Yesterday I went to a CLIP College Hour in S112. I listened to three presentations. One topic was
Domestic Violence. Domestic violence, sometimes called battering, relationship abuse, or intimate partner
violence, is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and
intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence.
Domestic violence impacts everyone, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or
religion. Thirty percent of Americans say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her husband
or boyfriend in the past year (Lieberman Research, Inc, Tracking Survey conducted for The Advertising
Council and the Family Violence Prevention Fund, July-October 1996). Domestic violence also affects same-sex relationships and men as victims.
We watched a moving video in the presentation. It showed a family's life. A husband beat his
wife, the lady did not talk about this to anyone. Because she wanted order in this family and this home,
she didn't want her son to lose his dad and be hurt by someone. But her son told his granddad. His
granddad was very sad after he listened to this case. Everybody was sad in his family. They advised the
lady to report to 311 and get help. Finally, the husband knew that he had done many things wrong. He
also wanted a warm family and then corrected his fault.
I think when many people face domestic violence, they often don't want to talk to anyone Because
of face and privacy. They don't want the policeman to get their information. They think maybe they will
make some trouble for the family, But staying silent is even worse.
The City of New York Resource Directory of Domestic Violence Services provides comprehensive
information on services available to domestic violence victims throughout the five boroughs. We can call
911 in an emergency, you can contact 311 for free, the New York City 24-hours, or toll-free domestic
violence hotline (1-800-621-HOPE) for up-to-date service information and assistance in over150 languages.
I was robbed at night a few days ago. A Spanish guy on a bike picked my back pocket, took
my iPhone and then rode away. It was so bad. Later I called 911 to get help. The policeman came and asked some information about me and brought me to the office to ask me many questions. Maybe they
cannot help me fine my iPhone, but i don't want such things to happen again to other people. NYC is a
big city. There are a lot of different people live here. I really hope the city's security will be better. I think
when we encounter dangerous things, if we don't always report them, then the crimes will be rampant.
This presentation taught us valuable information. If these experiences are part of our life, we are
not alone and help is available in our community. They understand how painful it is to live with abuse and
how difficult it can be to talk about our situation. We might feel hopeless, desperate, confused, and alone.we
may not want to tell people about our situation because we feel afraid, ashamed, or embarrassed. If we are in
immediate danger, call 911 or 311.

※※ CUNY’s EXTRA PROGRAMS
Education is the key to success. College students in the United States, especially at CUNY, are
very lucky because there are a lot of free programs that can help them continue their education to gain
more knowledge and find a job in the future. First of all we have Single Stop offers college student different
free services. Career Path is the second program that helps students in career advancement and successful
college transition. The last program is ASAP. It helps student pay for their courses. All of those programs
are free and give students advantages in their life.
From the presentation last Monday, we learned about an interesting program called Single Stop.
The presenter showed us several interesting points. We learned that Single Stop is a program that helps
students stay in school and graduate. It also helps students take full advantage of this benefits and services
(Quick Benefits Screening, Financial Counseling, Legal Assistance, and Tax Preparation). The presenter
introduced four different services: benefits screening, financial counseling, and legal assistant and free tax
preparation. First of all, Benefits Screening is a process that can help us with any financial worries. This service helps to determine if we are eligible for benefits such as health insurance, child care assistance,
food stamps, and many more. Secondly, free Financial Counseling provides help to manage, save and
budget your money. Third, they provide Legal Assistance. The program helps us with any legal problem by
giving us advice and it is free. Also, if it is necessary, they can help you in any fair hearing, housing
court cases, as well as in other matters. Finally, Tax Preparation is another service that helps students
and their families by providing excellent tax preparation, with the maximum refund and it is completely
free. We can apply during the months of January to April. In my opinion, this program provides
excellent benefits for students in their college time.
Learning skills is very important for college students because they want a better life for the future.
One interesting program we learned about is called Career Path. It is a free program that can support
students in career advancement and successful college transition. Career Path prepares participants
for an occupational training for nine months in medical CPR, AKJ, EMT, MOA, and CHW. It also provides
manufacturing, culinary, and green jobs (protect environment, interest in architecture, and save energy). To join
Career Path, students must be 18 years or older. Secondly, they must have a high school diploma or GED
and be interested in getting a good college degree. Third, they must be legally authorized to work in the
United States. We can get more information at this address www. CUNY career path.edu ,or call 1718-281-5157. I am interested in Career Path because this program offers many opportunities to students to learn
new skills and find a job after the training. I think I will inform and encourage my friends to participate
or integrate in Career Path because it is not only a program to earn money, but to become a helper in this world.
The last program we found interesting was ASAP. Queensborough Accelerate Study in Associate
Programs is dynamic and innovative programs that will help students finish their degree in three years or
less. This program guides students to complete every step until they graduate. We can apply for ASAP
before the college semester stars, but it has some limited conditions. For example, nursing and early
childhood education majors not eligible. The students must have 15 or fewer college credits and earn
a2.0 GPA or above. So if someone GPA standard doesn’t reach, he can’t apply for this program. ASAP
support students by providing a free monthly MTA METRO CARD. For more information about ASAP we
can ask questions at the at the office or also search at www.CUNY.edu/asap.com
In conclusion, those programs “SINGLE STOP, “CAREER PATH” and “ASAP” are some free
advantages those students at CUNY must participate in because they will help them to complete their
achievements. Even if students have struggles in their lives, those programs are ready to give
them the right advice.
※※※ visit class
I visit Basic skill class on Oct 18th. This class was taught by Salinas. She is kindly old lady. The classroom is H232. The class ran from 2:10pm to 3:55pm. I could understand the class, but sometimes it still wasn't clear what she said. The topic of discussion is " Read, Correct, Verbs in article " and " Summarizing, Writing a response paragraph ". It tough us about advantages and disadvantages shopping online. We read this article and corrected the verbs. After that talked about how to write the following summary. I like this class because Mrs Salinas is a conscientious and friendly teacher.

What's the most important thing you learned about college knowlege this semester?
I learned a lot of the knowlege in the college this semester. For example: how to get your college ID, how to borrow the books on college library, how can you apply for some college financial. In my opinion, the most important is that how can we apply for the Financial Aid. We can apply for this program and get some help from the government. Then finish our college classes.
