Girls
Frist, girls engage in more coopertive kinds of play. They like jumping rope or practicing dance steps together.
They also tend to say " Let's..." or " Why don't we..." Second,
girls like to spend time with only one or two best friends. Third, when there is conflict among friends, girls talk about the
undesirable behavior of playmates behind their backs rather than to their faces. As a result, a conflict between girls can take a long time to be resolved.
Boys
In contrast, boys engage in competitive rough and tumble play and physical fighting. They also like to appear tough by making verbal threats. They tend to say " I'm going to punch you." These kinds of threats are sometimes
made in anger, but they are also made in the spirit of play. Boys tend more to hang around with a larger group of
casual friends. They are more direct and confrontational, so their conflicts ae often over quite quickly.
2. Contrast girls and boys ( zigzag method )

★★ Hurricanes
Dear Sister Chan,
How are you doing in Alaska? We haven't seen each other for a long time since I came back to NYC. I know you are very busy lately as a BYU church student.
I am also busy with my studies and work, but I think we understand each other. Today I have some time to tell you something that happened in NYC. But first, don't worry about me, I'm fine.
From October 28th to 30th, Hurricane Sandy attacked NYC. It was such a terrible storm. I got some information online on Saturday night October 27th. The news said maybe the subway would be closed on Sunday night at 7:00pm, the buses would be closed at 9:00pm. Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the city about 8:00pm. The windows shook, there was high wind and heavy rain outside. Hurricane Sandy originated in the Mid-Atlantic. The power of the storm was due to a convergence of weather systems, and it packed maximum sustained wind of about 80 miles per hour. This often causes severe winter storms.
On Monday, the power was cut at our place for 8 days. There were a lot of trees and power lines knocked down. The subway, bridges, buses, airport and the schools were closed. The supermarket, stores, and offices were also all closed. The storm was blamed for burning about 100 houses to ash and more than 70 deaths in the NYC. Manhattan, New Jersey and Long Island were flooded, and the power was cut. These places were without light, buses, or subways. The losses from Hurricane Sandy will approach $50 billion. Today is November 13th. Although basically transportation and the power supply all have been fixed, in Long Island some places still have no power. This has made a lot of inconvenience.
I remember my hometown of South China which is a coastal city. The Typhoons reach our city in August and September very year. During that time, so many towns are flooded and a lot crops are damaged, and some villages' houses are destroyed. Most public places close. But goverment workers must work these days. They need to inspect everywhere till very late at night. I always worried about my dad because he had a lot of tasks at this time, even if it was raining and blowing hard outside. In 1988, the Yangtze River in China had a terrible flood. During the floods and providing relief, there were a lot of the People's Liberation Army who made sacrigices. Flooding affects so many provinces in China. That is so sad. There are more natural disasters in China every year. In my opinion, we all need to dedicate some love to people who are affected bu disasters. The United States is an immigrant country, gathering the different countries' people of the world. I think no matter where we come from, we should care about others and help people in disasters because we live the same country now. We also need to care about the development of this country in the future.

★★★People In Crowds
These days in our society, people are increased independent and lonely. When they are in crowds,
sometimes they act in a way they would not if they were alone. There are several instances where people behave
differently in crowds than alone.
One of my friend behaves like a kid and cracks a lot of jokes when in a group of freinds, however, he
is quiet and mature when alone. This change in personality kept me wondering in the beginning and later he got
used to it. I thinks he just wants to get attention of people in the group. Maybe he lacks confidence when he in
a group and tries a different way. On the other hand, I can think of some peolpe who are opposite of the earlier described personality. They are quiet in public but talk a lot with a friend. I think this type of personality is a bit
shy and takes time to make friends. They are not attention crazy and prefer to keep a low profile.
Sometimes, you can see someone turn up their phone music, listening and rocking with the rhythm.
This group of people don't want to be lonely when they are on the bus or go out by themself. Maybe they don't want
to talk with other strangers, they are listening to music to be less stressed and to be loners.
In my opinion, there are different traits of personality in human beings. They know what is good and respected
in society. When they have presence of friends, they will pretend to be good.
★★★★ American Values Prereading Question
1.what does “individualism” mean ?Is it good or bad in your opinion ?
It means selfishness or someone just do what he wants to do, did not want to care about other people around
him. I think it is not absolutely very bad. Because of different countries have different cultures. Individualism can
make someone who knows independent. In the US, since childhood, parents start teaching their children how to do
something by themself. They will have many good and creative ideas in their mind, and to do many curious things.
They will make u have strong personal characteristics. of course, there are many negatives inside. Self centered is
not good for other people ,they think you are unfriendly and don't want to make friend with them.
2.What is “culture”? Use some specific examples.
It means a countrys from a long time ago till now develop a lot of things, include, economic, education, art,
language, technology, religion, history, politics etc. For example: In China, we have up and down 5000years history.
we update many dynasties. From prosperous to fall behind other countries, and then develop. In the earlier years.
we have four great inventions of ancient China, papermaking, printing, the compass and gunpowder. We have The
great Wall in Beijing. In the US have the Brooklyn Bridge. Some tradition holiday such as Thanksgiving, Mid-Autumn Festival.
3.Some example of values are “individualism”, "cooperation and “honesty”. What are some values that are important
to you? What are some values that are important in America?
I think independent, cooperation, honesty, friendly, responsibility, respect, freedom are important to me .
Independent and freedom help me have a nice time, i can do many things what i want to do. Cooperation,
friendly, kindly and honesty let me make many good friends. We can help each other and know others what
they think. I think the values of America such as independence, cooperation, honesty, friendly, creativity. Many
cities in US are fast-paced, so many people didn't have much time to care about others, but cooperation and
friendliness can help some friends. It can reduce or change tight life. Independence and creativity can improve
the America to develop.
